Casablanca – The 28th edition of European Film Weeks which began on November 24 in several cities of the Kingdom including Casablanca, continues until December 10, with a program that gives pride of place to female characters.
For this 28th edition, it is the women who are in the spotlight. The year 2021 is special for women in cinema, which marks a strong symbolic turning point, with more and more films focused on women and the most important cinematographic awards – Oscar for best film, Palme d’Or at the Cannes festival, Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival – were awarded to female directors for films in which the main characters are women.
The selection for this edition is made up of 8 European feature films and 4 short films from the southern Mediterranean. More than twenty countries are represented (thanks to the co-production system).
The Ambassador of the European Union to Morocco, Patricia Pilar Llombart Cussac, invited many moviegoers to come and discover the selection of this edition which takes place in Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat and Agadir and composed again this year of films signed by prestigious or emerging authors who have distinguished themselves in the biggest festivals in the world.
She stressed that this cultural and artistic meeting also includes four of the best short films produced over the past two years, noting that this year’s program is marked by the quality of the subjects, in addition to the place of women as ‘actresses or producers.
She also expressed her joy for the return to cinemas after a year of compulsory break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, stressing that this return is a bearer of optimism.
Culture remains the best way, she added, to build bridges and forge links between the two shores of the Mediterranean, explaining that culture in general and cinema in particular is a great way to reach the goal of building a better world.
She welcomed that this cultural event coincides with the celebration of the World Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, noting that it will end on December 10, World Human Rights Day, “a opportunity to reflect and continue to fight against gender-based violence ”.
In screening this year, 8 European films, awarded or selected at Cannes, Venice, Toronto, San Sebastián and other international festivals, as well as a selection of short films from the south of the Mediterranean.
