‘Dune’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘Licorice Pizza’, more – Deadline

The Writers Guild of America has penciled in the films nominated for its 74th annual WGA awards, which go virtual again this year.

The Original Screenplay category will see the scribes behind Be the Richards, don’t look up, The French Dispatch, King Richard Yes licorice pizza competition for hardware.

The adapted screenplay career will be between CODA, Dune, Nightmare Alley, tick, tick… BOOM! Yes West Side Story.

On the documentary side, Ser Cousteau, exposes Muybridge Yes Like a rolling stone will fight for the WGA trophy.

Winners will be honored at the joint 2022 WGA Awards on Sunday, March 20, the final awards show before the 94th Academy Awards. This year’s eligibility period is March 1 to December 31, 2021.

The WGAs recognize outstanding achievement in original and adapted screenplays and documentaries, but some screenplays competing for the awards are not eligible due to WGA rules. It is the only guild that requires a film to have been produced under its minimum base agreement to be eligible. These rules (read them here) kept a few 2022 awards season regulars out of the mix today. Among them are those of Kenneth Branagh. Belfast by Original screenplay and Jane Campion dog power for Adapted: Screenplays That Could Be Oscar Favorites in their respective categories.

Other ineligible scripts in Original include a hero, pig, dough, parallel mothers, Jockey, run away, The hand of God, Annette, i am your man and winner of the Palme d’Or Titanium. In the Adapted category, are also ineligible the lost girl, drive my car, pass, cyrano and the highest-grossing film of the year Spider-Man: No Coming Home.
