The Belgian initiation drama by Lukas Dhont closeAli Abbasi’s Persian-language crime thriller holy spider and Swedish director Ruben Östlund’s satirical black comedy triangle of sadnesswhich won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, tops the nominations unveiled Tuesday for the European Film Awards (EFA) 2022. Each of the acclaimed titles, which also happen to be Oscar nominees for the 2023 Oscars in the category Best International Feature Film, received EFA nominations for Best European Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter and one acting category each.
Also in the running for the EFA 2021 for Best European Film are Alcarras of the period drama from Spaniard Carla Simón and Austrian director Marie Kreutzer Corset.
European honors are highly regarded in Hollywood as an indicator of the Oscars. Last year, Florian Zeller The father received three EFA nominations en route to earning six Oscar nominations and two wins, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for star Anthony Hopkins.
This year’s European Film Awards ceremony will take place on December 10 in Reykjavík, Iceland.
