“In 2022, Vicky Krieps will be Sissi”

What’s your favorite movie of 2021?

“Lately, I saw ‘Don’t Look Up’ by Adam McKay (released December 24 on Netflix, editor’s note) with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. I really liked it, it’s very effective.

But I would still opt for ‘Titane’, by French director Julia Ducournau (the Palme d’Or at the last Cannes film festival, editor’s note) … even if everyone hates this film [rires]. I admit that it is a rather divisive work. We like it or we don’t. On me it worked fine. I was in it from start to finish. But I can understand that a lot of people are having a little trouble. From the opening scene where a woman makes love with a car, the director must have lost spectators… It’s the kind of production where you have to be ready to see the film.

What is your favorite series of 2021?

“It’s more complicated. Due to the fact that I saw less series this year, due to lack of time. But also the fact that I didn’t really fall in love with art. So I would say maybe ‘Sex Education’ season 3, which airs on Netflix. It’s a bit special to go for a third season like this, but nothing really jumped out at me.

We’re in the home stretch, and hopefully we can show ‘Corsage’ at a big festival.

Afterwards, it is also true that I am satisfied with what is available on legal platforms: Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV +, etc. I am not going into the illegal. I admit that I wouldn’t even know how to do it. So a series like ‘Succession’, proposed by HBO, escaped me when, from what I heard, it seems to me that I should have hung well.

What is your favorite Luxembourg (co) production seen in 2021?

“’Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn’ (Paul Thiltges Distributions), a Romanian film. A cinema that I know well now, since I produced ‘Collective’ by Alexander Nanau. It was, it seems to me, the first film that I saw where people really wore the mask and where we did not hide the pandemic that is affecting us now.

Like many, I discovered Romanian cinema with the Palme d’Or obtained in Cannes in 2007 by Cristian Mungiu with the film ‘4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days’. After seeing him on the Croisette, I was convinced that it was he who should win that year.

Afterwards, I was able to meet Cristian Mungiu a few times in Bucharest, since he is a friend of Alexander Nanau. And discover more in depth this Romanian cinema which is very well represented today. How do we explain his current good health? Even though it’s not something state-implemented, I don’t think it’s due to chance. This is never the case when several people from the same place have a story to tell at the same time. As we have already seen in other countries where we have experienced similar waves of good films.

A remarkable performance by an actor / actress in 2021?

“I am a member of the jury for the Shooting Stars of the Berlinale, awards given each year, on the sidelines of the Berlin Festival, to young European actors and actresses. A program organized by the European Film Promotion. And, as part of the 2022 edition, I was able to see ‘Between the Waves’ by director Anaïs Volpé. A film in which the duo composed of the French Déborah Lukumuena (César for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, in 2017, for the film ‘Divines’, editor’s note) and the Swiss Souheila Yacoub marked me.

A cinematographic expectation for 2022?

“’Lightyear’ (or ‘Buzz lightyear’ in French, editor’s note), the spin-off of the ‘Toy Story’ saga from Pixar studios, which tells the origins of the character of Buzz lightyear. I grew up with ‘Toy Story’. The first episode of this quadrilogy came out in 1995. I was 12 years old. It was the first to be in 3D, and it really marked me. I can’t wait to see what they do with the character of Buzz.

Otherwise, on a more personal level, 2022 will also be the year Vicky Krieps will play the role of Elisabeth de Wittelsbach, Empress of Austria, better known by the nickname Sissi. ‘Corsage’ is a film by Austrian director Marie Kreutzer that we are co-producing with Samsa Film (notably alongside Kazak Productions, the production company of ‘Titane’). And which was partly filmed here. This is a budget of more or less seven million euros, in which the Film Fund Luxembourg has contributed to the tune of one and a half million. This film is a portrait of Sissi at the dawn of her 40th birthday, a moment in her life when she was considered an elderly woman by the society around her but also by herself. So it’s a film about a woman and the way she lives with her image. It’s very modern, a thousand miles from the productions of the 50s where Romy Schneider shone, or even the new German version released in 2021 where the role of Sissi is played by Switzerland’s Dominique Devenport.

When is the outing scheduled?

“It’s not yet defined. We still have to discuss this with the distributor for Benelux and the one for Germany. International sales will be handled by the French MK2. We are in the home stretch, and I hope we can show it at a big festival. “
