where can I change my name to Martin’s? …
Shows if nothing nowhere?
Until the cultural milieu was – again – put on hiatus, it was a pleasure to find the cinema again. No matter the external torments, this is the ideal place to heal your wounds and dream better.
The year was perhaps tumultuous and incredible, but that did not prevent the high quality seventh art from surging in. Local summits (Archipelago, No trace, The night of kings, The drunken birds), English-speaking nuggets (Spencer, Wolfwalkers, Licorice Pizza, Minari) and foreign (Malmkrog, God’s hand, The devil does not exist, Martin Eden), through the landmark documentaries (Summer of soul, Little girl, Collective) and quality blockbusters (Dune, No Time to Die), there was something to satisfy all appetites.
What are the 10 films that impressed me the most? Here is my list of the best feature films that premiered in Quebec – in theaters or online – between January 1 and December 31, 2021 …
10. tie C’mon C’mon
Tears soon abound in this ode to childhood and family. Swapping classic narrativity for dialogue and observation, Mike Mills (Beginners) films life in its most beautiful way. The actors there are extraordinary.

10. tie Days
Coming out of retirement, the great master Tsai Ming-liang offers a sensual and contemplative encounter between two lonely souls. In front of so much beauty, words become superfluous, letting the silences of desire take over.

9. Annette
Musical films were numerous this year. The most twirling was certainly this flamboyant opera by the too rare Leos Carax, where Adam Driver is unleashed on the music of the Sparks. Virtuosity to spare, until a particularly heartbreaking finish.

8. Dear friends!
Andrei Konchalovsky wrote for the great Tarkovsky and directed Sylvester Stallone! At 83, he lifts the veil on the lies of the past, engaging in a real fight between shadow and light. A beautifully performed and interpreted memory effort.

7. Titanium
The shock of the last Cannes Film Festival. Julia Ducournau (Serious) tackles the fluctuating genre with uncommon efficiency, constantly making humanity triumph over adversity. A daring and perfectly deserved Palme d’Or.
MAKE SURE THAT IT IS A TITANIUM IMAGE … pretty sure it does. = BA image

6. The things we say, the things we do
Sentimental relationships have always been at the heart of the work of Emmanuel Mouret, who offers his most majestic opus. Everything flows from the source in this poem of words and emotions where we come out lighter.

5. Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy
Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Happy hour) is possibly the most interesting director in activity. He brilliantly questions our relationship to others with this triptych that melts in your mouth. Drive My Car is also likely to end up in our top 2022 …

4. Bad fuck or barjo porn
The last Golden Bear does not leave you indifferent. Romanian Radu Jude (Aferim!) lays an implacable satire of generalized hypocrisy, coupled with a sour reflection on ideological drift. A simply brilliant proposition.
MAKE SURE A GOOD PHOTO (NAME?) AND METROPOLE FILMS DOESN’T WORK FOR THIS FILM NOW! = from BA, okay?

3. The woman who ran away
There is no director who calms the spirit as much as Hong Song-soo. With him, existence is made up of strong heroines, melancholy wanderings and well-watered tragicomic discussions. A new peak in a more than enviable career.
NO PICTURES !!!!!
2. The Green Knight
It is the bet of a Dantesque staging, the most dazzling of the year. David Lowery (A Ghost Story) isn’t afraid to upend convention and hits hard with this over-ambitious tale, giving Dev Patel a golden role.

1. Nomadland
2021 was the crowning achievement of filmmaker Chloé Zhao’s young career (The Rider), who triumphed at the Oscars with this free and powerful work, important in many ways. A shock wave that almost excuses the disappointment of Eternals.
