Russia 1 – Ukraine 2

Since he announced the presence in competition of the Russian Kirill Serebrennikov, recently exiled in Berlin, with “Madame Tchaikovsky”, the general delegate of the Festival Thierry Frémaux is under pressure to withdraw it from the poster. The Ukrainian Institute (government agency in charge of culture), in particular, criticizes the film for having been financed by the oligarch Roman Abramovich. When we know the political commitment of Serebrennikov, who entered into dissidence and who pays him with his freedom, the situation has something grotesque: in time of war, propaganda rages on all sides.

What Ukrainian Sergei Loznitsa should remind us of in his documentary “The Natural History of Destruction” (Special session). After resigning from the European Film Academy, whose reaction to the Russian invasion he considered “toothless”the filmmaker was ousted from his Ukrainian counterpart for not having supported the call for a boycott by Russian artists.

Ukraine will also be represented at Un Certain Regard by “Butterfly Vision”the first film by Maksim Nakonechnyi, about the return to Donbass of a pregnant soldier after being raped by her jailer.

The hope of the palm gives life

They have often competed for the palm but still hope for it. They are David Cronenberg, in the running with his first film for eight years, “Crimes of the Future”twilight anticipation on a couple of artists (Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux) who develop new organs to exhibit them during clandestine performances.

Never rewarded, even shouted down, for films as admirable as “The Night Belongs to Us” or “Two Lovers”, James Gray is trying his luck for the fifth time with “Armageddon Time”, inspired by his adolescence in New York, in the shadow of the Trumps and their growing power. In the cast: Anne Hathaway, Anthony Hopkins and Jeremy Strong.

As for the Korean Park Chan-wook, whose “Old Boy” (grand jury prize in 2004) just missed the supreme consecration, will he have better luck with his new erotic thriller, “Decision to Leave” ?

girl gang

They are four in competition. Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, whose meeting with Patrice Chéreau was decisive, plunges back into the effervescence of “Almond Trees” from Nanterre to portray a group of young actors in the 1980s plagued by AIDS. In the role of the director known for never giving up, Louis Garrel, who claims to have worked on “an impression of Chéreau”.

Webbed repeat offenders

Already webbed, they have their napkin rings on the Croisette. The Dardenne brothers, covered in gold for “Rosetta” in 1999 and for “l’Enfant” in 2005, celebrate the friendship of two young African migrants in Belgium in “Tori and Lokita”.

The Middle East in force

The competition has never relied so much on renewal with nine first entrants, Belgian Lukas Dhont (golden camera in 2018 for “Girl”), with “Close”to the Spaniard Albert Serra, whose “Torment on the Islands” immerses Benoît Magimel in French Polynesia and in the doldrums of nuclear testing.

Without forgetting three dazzling revelations of genre cinema from the Middle East. After “the Law of Tehran”, Saeed Roustaee, with “Leila’s Brothers”signs a family fresco which would be between “the Godfather” and the Iranian Ettore Scola.
