Top-notch selection for the 29th edition of European Film Weeks

The 29th edition of the European Film Weeks is being held in Morocco from December 7 to 21, 2022 in four cities of the Kingdom, with a selection of the greatest European auteur films of the year, with the Palme d’Or of the Cannes Film Festival opening.

This unmissable meeting of European cinema in Morocco will take place in Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech and Tangier with a rich and diversified program of 8 feature films selected and awarded at the biggest film festivals around the world, as well as short films. footage from the South of the Mediterranean, underlines a press release from the organizers.

Last May, the Swedish director Ruben Östlund won the Palme d’or at the Cannes Film Festival for the second time after that obtained for “The Square” in 2017, and thus joined the very closed club of filmmakers with two palms. Since then, “Without Filter”, his event film, has never ceased to arouse enthusiasm, and in particular during his visits to the Toronto, Karlovy Vary, London and Deauville Festivals.

Taking a satirical look at the consumer society, “Sans Filtre” deals with the class struggle using fierce and uncompromising humor. The film follows Carl and Yaya, a couple of models and influencers, invited on a yacht for a luxury cruise, just after Fashion Week. While the crew takes great care of the vacationers, the captain refuses to leave his cabin as the famous gala dinner approaches. Events take an unexpected turn and the balance of power is reversed when a storm rises and endangers the comfort of the passengers.

“We are very happy to return each year with the best recent European films. Arthouse films that have toured the biggest festivals in the world and which give us unique and strong points of view on contemporary societal themes”, said Patricia Llombart Cussac, European Union Ambassador to Morocco.

“Culture, especially through cinema, brings us together and unites us. It is an instrument of dialogue, understanding, mutual respect, and entertainment too. The opening film, “Without filter” by Swede Ruben Östlund, will not fail to arouse laughter and debate, as everywhere it has been shown throughout the world”, continued Ms. Cussac.

Since their creation, the European Film Weeks have continued to promote European auteur cinema, which is still rare in Moroccan cinemas. A long-awaited meeting for film buffs and the curious, happy to find an always qualitative and demanding selection of unreleased films. The event attracts an average of 12,000 spectators each year.

The European Film Weeks have been organized since 1991 by the European Union in Morocco in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, the Moroccan Cinematographic Center, the Hiba Foundation and the Superior School of Visual Arts of Marrakesh.
