Cillian Murphy underwent a weight loss transformation for her latest role.
the Peaky Blinders star was recently photographed looking visibly slender on the set of Oppenheimer in Princeton, New Jersey, United States.
The Irishman plays the titular character J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist known as the “Father of the Atomic Bomb.”
The film will see Murphy collaborate again with director Christopher Nolan, with the pair having previously worked together on The black Knight trilogy, Creation and Dunkirk.
Speaking about the role earlier this year, Murphy, 45, told Esquire: “It’s the first time he’s been [Nolan] throw me in the lead, which still shocks me a bit, but I’m delighted.
“It’s a huge game and a lot of work. But, in my opinion, you are working with one of the greatest living directors, so you are in good hands. »
Based on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, which won the Pulitzer Prize, the film was written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherman.
The film will center on the former head of the wartime Los Alamos laboratory and his involvement in the Manhattan Project – the code name for American nuclear weapons research and development in the 1940s.

Murphy is just one of many stars in the cast, which will feature Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s wife – biologist and botanist – Kitty, Matt Damon as Manhattan Project director Leslie Groves Jr. and Robert Downey Jr. as founding commissioner of the US Atomic Energy Commission, Lewis Strauss.
Florence Pugh will play psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie will play theoretical physicist Edward Teller, and Josh Hartnett will play pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.
Rami Malek, Michael Angarano, Alden Ehrenreich, Kenneth Branagh and Matthew Modine will also appear in the film, while Gary Oldham has confirmed he has a small appearance in one scene.
But as with all Nolan productions, details are being kept under wraps.
“The difference with this one is that the story is there, everyone knows what happened,” Murphy said.
“But Chris says it in a different way, as you would expect with Chris. That’s all I can say. »
He added that he would research the role extensively – not expecting to ever figure out what his character was working on.
He explained, “There’s a ton of stuff out there and I’m going to read it all. I will never, ever understand quantum mechanics, no matter how hard or how many times people try to explain it to me.
“There is 0.0001% of the population of the planet who has the gray matter to understand this. But I can start to understand, conceptually, what these guys were trying to do. »
Oppenheimer is scheduled for July 21, 2023.
