From this Thursday, June 30, 2022, Saint Malo will for a few days serve as a framework for the filming from the mini-series netflix adapted of the bestseller by American Anthony Doerr, All the light we can’t see (All the light we cannot see).

Selling fifteen million copies and crowned with a Pulitzer Prize in 2015, this historical novel takes place partly in the corsair city, at the end of the Second World War.

Dr. House in Saint-Malo

The fourth main actors of this series in four episodes are expected in Saint-Malo, starting with the English actor Hugh Laurie, famous for his role in the series Dr House. Mark Ruffalo (Hulk, in Marvel Avengers) and the two young actors Aria Mia Loberti and Louis Hofman – who play the roles of Marie-Laure and Werner -, complete the line-up.

A Dinan door scene

The shooting should be spread over “two to three days”, starting Thursday. Filming with the actors will take place on Thursday June 30 and Friday July 1, 2022. Depending on the vagaries of the weather, an additional day could be scheduled for Saturday.

If the production remains voluntarily vague on the places of the shots in order not to disturb a work which must go quickly, it nevertheless informs thata scene will notably be shot at the Porte de Dinan, this Friday, from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. This scene, which requires quite a lot of decorating work, is supposed to represent Saint-Malo in the throes of the Liberation, so it shouldn’t be surprising to see smoke rising above the Dinan door. But there will be nothing to worry about, assures Scott Elias, for the American co-production, all security measures being taken. The light installations will be carried out this Thursday.

Shooting until Sunday

Other shots will be taken on the beaches, at Good help or even at the Mole beach, where the last scene of the mini-series will be filmed. In parallel, images will be captured to be used for the digital effects of the series. Some shots will be taken from a helicopter or by drone, until Sunday July 3.

A display for residents

The shooting will be short, but intense. It is equivalent to “one week of filming” under normal conditions. Scott Elias expresses the wish for a shoot that will have the least possible impact. Partly on the residents of intramural Saint-Malo, informed of the disturbances in their mailboxes and by posting, relays for its part the City of Saint-Malo.

People who know the city and who worked on the filming of The Three Musketeers last fall.

The shooting of the other scenes supposed to represent the streets of the corsair city will be carried out in Villefranche-sur-Rouergue, in Aveyron, this summer. Nothing has yet been decided as to the broadcast date of the four episodes of this mini-series directed by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) on the Netflix platform.
