Inside the tragedies that haunted George Floyd’s family and witnesses after his death as his niece, 4, is shot dead

GEORGE Floyd’s name became synonym of the fight for racial justice after a viewer’s video of his dying moments shocked the world.

The 46-year-old was murdered in May 2020 by police officer Derek Chauvin who knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes during a brutal arrest in Minneapolis.

Away from the trial – which saw Chauvin sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison – Floyd’s relatives and those who witnessed his last heartbreaking moments suffered their own tragedies.

On New Years Day, her little niece Arianna Delane was shot dead in her bed in an attack on the family home in Texas.

“Dad, I was touched”

Arianna Delane yelled “Daddy, I was hit” and had to have surgery in Houston this weekend after bullets punctured her lungs, liver and broke three ribs.

She was allegedly the victim of targeted shooting.

Holding back tears, her father told ABC, “My daughter stood up and said, ‘Daddy, I was touched.’

The cops did not reveal a motive or provide a description of the suspect.

But the girl’s family said they knew who opened fire and suggested the shooting was targeted, without commenting further on the motive.

The child is said to have attended several protests last year in honor of his murdered uncle.

ABC 13 released footage of the family, including Arianna, last year reacting to Derek Chauvin being convicted of Floyd’s murder.

Arianna’s mother is the niece of Floyd Bianca, whose mother is his sister, LaTonya.

Floyd was the eldest of five children of George Perry and Larcenia Jones Floyd.

Her two brothers are Rodney and Philonise, and her other sister is Bridgett.

POLICE PROSECUTION

Just six months earlier, the teenager who filmed George Floyd’s murder said her uncle was killed in a high-speed car crash involving police.

Surveillance video showed innocent passer-by Leneal Lamont Frazier’s Jeep was struck by cops chasing another vehicle.

Police were chasing a suspect suspected of participating in a carjacking.

Frazier, who was driving to his girlfriend’s house, died in hospital.

His niece Darnella won a Pulitzer Prize for filming Floyd’s murder.

At the time she filmed Floyd’s murder, she was only 17 years old.

Millions of people would see the video, and Frazier, now 18, testified at Derek Chauvin’s trial.

“It’s been nights that I stayed up to apologize and apologize to George Floyd for not doing more and not interacting physically and not having saved his life,” she told the court, according to the New York Times.

Referring to Chauvin, she added, “But it’s like, it’s not what I should have done, it’s what he should have done. “

TESTIMONY IN TEARS

Frazier cried as he gave his testimony, which was recorded off-camera due to his age.

“When I look at George Floyd, I look at my father, I look at my brothers, I look at my cousins, my uncles, because they are all black,” she declared in court.

Of her uncle’s death, she wrote on Facebook: “Honestly, I can’t believe I’m posting this post right now… I’m so hurt… nothing feels real.

“I woke up to the most horrible news. The MINNEAPOLIS police killed my uncle. My uncle… Another black man lost his life at the hands of the police!

“I’m still in shock and it hasn’t completely affected me yet, I burst into tears.

DAILY TRAUMA

Another eyewitness to Floyd’s death described dealing with the trauma of what he saw every day.

Donald Williams told the Star Tribune: “I look to my left, I see George Floyd.

“I look to my right, I see George Floyd. I look away and it’s like I always remember.

“It’s traumatic. It’s traumatic and I’m taking care of it. The whole situation is traumatic. I face it daily. “
