Oppenheimer: an anguished first trailer for Nolan’s atomic film

After several months of waiting, the next film by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimerhas finally revealed itself in a first trailer as epic as it is anguished.

Few things are certain in these uncertain times, but where it remains possible to bet your money sanely, it is of course on Christopher Nolan’s propensity to elaborate stories more convoluted than each other. And if its previous tenet is far from having won unanimous support, this has in no way prevented his next film from being among the most anticipated projects of 2023.

Carried by a cast of one thousand five hundred and twelve stars and led by the excellent Cillian MurphyOppenheimer had so far played with a promotion that was sibylline to say the least; an explosive first teaser featuring a continuous count as well asa handful of photos promoting the famous atomic film had thus been enough to arouse the curiosity of the spectator without however fully satisfying it. But while this new fresco of action will not yet invest theaters for six months, Universal Pictures finally unveiled the first trailer, which features a character tortured by his creation.

Based on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin (and incidentally winner of a Pulitzer Prize in 2006), the film will therefore retrace the life and torments of the eponymous physicist in the heart of the Second World War. Appointed by General Groves as scientific director of the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer will lead, willy-nilly, the Los Alamos National Laboratory to design the first three atomic bombs in history.

It had already been revealed a few weeks earlier that besides the crazy bet of recreate a nuclear explosion without CGI (Yes Yes),Oppenheimer was also based on the very ambitious idea to spread his story over four decades ; a narrative bias reflected in this first preview. Cillian Murphy, who will therefore lend her features to the infamous character, can thus be observed carrying her anxieties slung over time, while the image alternates between color, a superb black and white, and the menacing incandescence of the flames. .

To accompany him in this first main role under the aegis of Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy (having so far exclusively camped secondary characters for the director), will be accompanied, among others, by Emily Blunt, who will interpret the Oppenheimer’s wife, Florence Pugh (psychiatrist Jean Tatlock), Robert Downey Jr. (businessman Lewis Strauss), Matt Damon (General Groves), and Gary Oldman (United States President Harry S. Truman).

Will also be present in the poster in roles still undetermined the brilliant Rami Malek (Dying can wait, Mr. Robot), Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie (Good Time, Licorice Pizza), Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, A Cure for Life), Jack Quaid (The Boys), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things, Full Metal Jacket), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Sublime Creatures) or even Josh Peck (Drake and Josh). Certainly, it is desirable. But it will be a matter of waiting until July 19, 2023 to discover all these beautiful people at work.
