Final fantasy xiv heads to nintendo switch 2 – but mouse controls and 30fps raise questions

Square Enix delivered a significant surprise at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest 2026: the long-awaited MMORPG is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 this August. Director Naoki Yoshida unveiled the news during a live demo, immediately followed by details of a separate subscription model for the hybrid console.

Mouse controls and performance: a measured approach

However, initial technical specifics remained scarce. A subsequent roundtable discussion revealed key insights. Yoshida confirmed that the Switch 2 version will indeed incorporate mouse controls – a feature supported and actively tested – though he admitted he hasn’t yet tackled Savage raids with the integrated input. The QA team, he stated, is rigorously evaluating the system, but he expressed a preference for traditional controller usage, particularly for demanding endgame content like those brutal raids.

Tailored experience, not raw power

Tailored experience, not raw power

Yoshida emphasized the strategic design: “You can choose the way you want to play. You can put it in the [dock] to play on the TV, and I think people who want to do Savage raids might want to sit down, go into the content, and I imagine they would hook up their mouse and keyboard.” This clearly signals a deliberate attempt to cater to a range of player preferences – a welcome flexibility for a notoriously complex game.

Optimized for the hybrid

Beyond controls, the Switch 2 version will support full keyboard and mouse integration, mirroring the console iterations. Yet, Yoshida highlighted the advantages of the handheld-console format: “Whereas, we can also play in handheld mode, if you’re a gatherer or crafter [in-game non-combat classes] you can take it with you and do more casual things.” This strategic approach reflects the console’s unique capabilities, recognizing the potential for a more accessible and mobile experience.

Stabilizing the frame rate

Addressing performance concerns, Yoshida acknowledged early feedback about specifications. “I’ve already noticed some comments on the social channels talking about the specs and how does it compare to the other more robust systems… I want to be honest to you, we are really working hard on the optimization for the platform and we are striving to get the best performance.” The game will target 30 frames per second, though acknowledging a potential drop in towns due to player density. “But we are still able to reach 30 frames per second, and stay in a stable state,” he assured players. “Performance is something you don’t have to be concerned about.”

Subscription model – a layered approach

Finally, Yoshida outlined the subscription structure. Players won’t require Nintendo Switch Online, but will need a separate FFXIV subscription for the Switch 2 version. Existing subscribers will receive a 50% discount on the new fee. This tiered system speaks to the game’s enduring popularity and Square Enix’s commitment to expanding its reach. Shadowbringers is now included in the free trial, albeit with in-game limitations.

Looking ahead: evercold and beyond

With the upcoming Evercold expansion and the integration of Patch 8.0 – which shifts the MMO towards a weekly content cycle – Square Enix is positioning the Switch 2 version as a vehicle for player choice and engagement. The company aims to provide a flexible experience, allowing players to tailor their journey within the vast world of Eorzea. The release of this highly anticipated port demonstrates a clear understanding of the Switch 2’s strengths and a willingness to adapt a beloved title to a new audience. Don’t expect a flawless transition, but anticipate a compelling and accessible slice of FFXIV.
