Sony axes ps5 disc production, hundreds of jobs at risk – a digital pivot?
Sony is dramatically shifting its manufacturing strategy, abruptly halting production of physical PlayStation 5 games at a major Austrian facility. The move, triggered by plummeting sales of physical media, signals a decisive move towards a purely digital future for the console.
Mass retraining underway as sony re-tools
Hundreds of employees at the Thalgau plant, currently churning out an astonishing 600,000 discs daily – accounting for half of Sony DADC’s output – are facing retraining. Instead of replicating PS5 game discs, they’ll be focused on producing optical microlenses, a surprisingly lucrative market shift. This isn’t a job loss announcement, Sony insists, but a strategic realignment, albeit one with significant workforce implications.

Numbers don’t lie: physical sales are dying
CEO Dietmar Tanzer revealed that Sony anticipates a staggering 90% reduction in volume by 2028, down to roughly 10% of current levels. This aligns with a broader industry trend: physical game sales are demonstrably declining year-on-year, a reality Sony appears to be accepting with unsettling speed.
Beyond the ps5: a signal for the next generation?
Analysts are interpreting Sony’s decision as a clear indicator that the next PlayStation – codenamed Project Helix – will also eschew physical discs. Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis suggests the move is purely cost-driven, a pragmatic response to spiraling component prices. Removing the disc drive, he argues, represents a substantial simplification, a key factor in controlling costs for the next-gen console. While Sony hasn’t formally ruled out an add-on disc drive for older titles, it’s a gamble with potentially limited appeal.
Microsoft follows suit – no disc drive in sight
Sony’s move isn’t an isolated event. Microsoft’s Xbox, Project Helix, is also reportedly foregoing a disc drive, and exploring a ‘disc-to-digital’ feature – essentially, a license purchased with a physical disc, granting digital access. This reinforces the impression of a fundamental shift in the console landscape, a move away from the tangible towards the cloud.
A calculated risk, or a fatal mistake?
The backlash has been swift and brutal. Consumers, developers, and even celebrities have voiced their disapproval. Yet, the numbers paint a compelling picture: the death knell for physical game sales. Sony’s gamble – a complete digital transition – may well be the only viable path forward, but it’s a move that risks alienating a significant segment of its user base. The future of gaming, it seems, is decidedly un-disc-like.”
