After a saga worthy of its own underwater narrative, Subnautica 2 is finally surfacing. Unknown Worlds has announced the early access launch for PC and Xbox Series X|S is set for May 14, 2026, at 8 AM PT, priced at a palatable $29.99 – a welcome price point amidst a busy gaming calendar.
A crowded launch window, but a unique appeal
The release strategically positions Subnautica 2 alongside the eagerly awaited LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and 007 First Light. However, each game caters to distinct audiences, suggesting that the underwater exploration experience won't necessarily be lost in the shuffle. Ted Gill, CEO of Unknown Worlds, expressed the team's excitement in a press release, emphasizing their eagerness to receive player feedback as the game evolves through Early Access.

Development began in 2022, initially targeting a 2025 release. Last summer, however, the project hit a major snag when Krafton, the parent company, removed Gill and other key leadership figures, citing their focus on other projects.
The ensuing lawsuit alleged a far more cynical motive: Krafton allegedly sought to avoid paying a $250 million bonus tied to revenue targets. A judge ultimately reinstated Gill and his team in March 2026, ruling that Krafton lacked justification for the dismissals. The speed with which a launch date followed this reinstatement underscores the team's determination to finally bring Subnautica 2 to players.
